The Kerygma

The Preachings of Peter

The Kerygma is the apostolic publication of the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. The resurrection is is the content of apostolic preaching and is the only religious and doctrinal truth, given by God for the salvation for mankind; it is the only the doctrine for the true liberation of the soul from sin; made effective through the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Kerygma is a Greek word which means "proclamation, announcement, preaching". kerygma is pronounced "kay-roog-ma" Related words are kerux ("herald, preacher"and kerusso ("announce, make known, proclaim aloud, preach" . kerygma has become a technical term in biblical scholarship with a special meaning. It deals with the soul of early apostolic preaching. This preaching is called Apostolic Preaching. Kerygma means the preaching of the cross and resurrection in an apostolic context, and the subsequent teaching of the apostle's doctrine.

The book of Acts, and principally, the preaching of Peter, is the basis for apostolic preaching. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, was the first disciple, after Andrews, to be called. He was the only disciple to which Jesus, said that he prayed that his faith would not fail. He was the only disciple that Jesus rebuked personally. He is the only disciple, that Jesus specifically gave a charge to be the Bishop and Presider of the apostles. Peter, has it to his honor, that Jesus called his name and commissioned him, first. It is in this capacity that he preaches the first set of messages. This appointment by Christ, meant that Peter's bishopric ( oversight, overseer, office, charge, the presiding officer); is the yardstick by which all subsequent preaching is measured. Truth or falsity is determined by this measuring yardstick. All subsequent preachers, must tow the line with Peter's doctrine. All the apostles agree that the message preached by Peter is exactly what Christ taught; and that he appointed Peter as their Bishop; and they agreed to submit to this brotherhood of the apostleship. The doctrine declared by Peter is central to the nature of the apostolic message. Christ gave Peter the keys and charged Peter to be the pastoral president over the apostles. Thus, Peter's doctrine is anointed by the spirit and commandment of Christ. Peter's authority and leadership in the early Church is unquestioned, and all subsequent gospel doctrine conforms to that which Christ quickened in Peter's memory. It is not that Christ did not quicken the doctrine in the other apostle's memory, for he surely did; by appointing Peter, he was establishing ordering his apostolic church to be following by subsequent generations.

Subsequent to the resurrection of Christ, the angels tell Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome: " Go tell Peter that in Galilee they shall see Jesus" ,Mar 16:7. Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulcher, Luke 24:12. On the way to Emmaus, Jesus joins and walk with Peter and the others and open to them the scriptures; :for, their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures Luke 24:32.

After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise showed he himself. There were others with Simon Peter. Simon Peter said to them: "I am going fishing"; and they said: "we will go with you". The appears the resurrected Jesus, who upon hearing of it plunged himself naked, into the sea. The resurrection Jesus, gives some fishing instruction and invites Peter and the others to a meal that he has prepared. Where upon Jesus rebukes Peter, and secures his pledge to be a leader and preach the doctrine delivered to them.

This is now the third time that Jesus showed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead. So when they had dined, Jesus said to thrice to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, do you love me more than these fish? Then Feed my lambs. Feed my sheep. Feed my sheep and Follow me. Peter, I say unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon the confession of your faith I will build my church with you as the first presiding bishop and the against the gospel you preach, the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Furthermore, I give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. All the apostles are commanded to recognize you as the leader and conform their preaching to that which I have ordained; and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Mat 16:18-19; John 21:1-19.

The Preaching of Peter

The preaching of Peter are recorded in the book of Acts. The text of his messages are recorded in Acts 2:14-39; 3:12-26; 4:8-12; 5:29--34; 10:34-48. The content of these these messages is what we call the "kergyma". "Kerygma" means and refers to the substance or the content of that which is preached. It does not refer to the manner in which the message is preached; but rather as to substance or the content of the message. It refers to what the message says. Thus the substance contained in the preaching of Peter; sets the tone for all subsequent preaching genre, designated as apostolic. The word genre comes from the French word for 'kind' or 'class'. The term is used to refer to a distinctive type of Preaching. That is to say, it's principal task is to preach the type of message preached by Peter; and set a difference between it and all others. This distinctive type of preaching is set forth in Peter's preaching of the resurrection. This is apostolic preaching and is the only type anointed, ordained and commanded by Christ. The theological unfolding the resurrection was the task of Paul and John. Some of the other brethren codified early resurrection preaching is exemplified by the gospels.

Apostolic preaching must meet and adhere to the Petrine category for content. The content of the message, it's genre is: "the resurrection preaching of repentance, forgiveness, baptism in the name of Jesus, remission of sins, and the in filling of the Holy Ghost ". Apostolic preaching is marked by doctrinal and confessional crucifixion and resurrectional attributes.

In the last days Jesus of Nazareth was taken, by the Jews, crucified and slain; but God raised him up, having loosed the pains of death. This is fulfillment of the promise made to David; and is central to Peter's message. God swore with an oath to David, that of flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; He was speaking of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. This Jesus is exalted to the right hand of God. This Jesus is hath shed forth the promise of the Holy Ghost. Repent, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and this Jesus will pour out upon you the gift of the Holy Ghost. Gladly received this word be baptized: and continue steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. (Acts 2:14-42).

The word: "remission" means to release from bondage or imprisonment; it means forgiveness or pardon, of sins; it means letting them go as if they had never been committed; it means remission of the of sin and its penalty. It means that upon repentance, baptism in the name Jesus Christ, and in filling of the Holy Ghost; sin is rendered powerless in human nature; and the nature of Christ (Holy Ghost) is the gift received. The destruction of sin and life in a new kingdom is central to the Petrine doctrine. This genre of preaching boldly asserts that this is accomplished in the prophetic death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. This genre of preaching asserts that this fulfils the promise made to both Abraham and David. Baptism into the the name Jesus Christ, is baptism into Christ's death. To be plunged into water by immersion in the name of Jesus Christ is to be buried with Christ. Rising from the watery grave to walk by faith in the power of the Holy Ghost. Rising, having gladly received the apostolic doctrine and participate in the blessing of the Abrahamic and Dravidic covenant. Literally, the Petrine doctrine is the keys to the kingdom of God; and faithful obedience is the entrance. To not walk in the apostolic doctrine is to continue to walk in sin; and be subject to God's angels waging war against your life.

At the core of apostolic preaching is the ‘kerygma’. The kerygma is content of what is preached. Preaching is a mode of delivery; the ‘kerygma’ is that which is delivered. Apostolic preaching delivers the ‘speech (Word) of faith’. The kerygma says: The Lord Jesus Christ, the supreme God, was cucified and rose from the dead for our salvation. This message is most loved by the Godhead.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shine in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (Gen 1:1-3; John 1:1-5, 14).

Baptist, Catholic, Jehovah Witness, Seventh Day Adventist, Trinitarian, Docetic, Holiness, Charismatic, Pentecostal or Sabbatarian preaching is not Apostolic Preaching. They all the name of Jesus, but they both miss the main component of Peter's message: " In his resurrection Christ, remits, removes, and sets free from sin". In his resurrection Christ has proclaimed: "Victory over sin"; "Freedom from Sin"; Liberty from sinning" and the giving of the gift of Eternal Life. This is the core of the Kerygma and Peter's preaching. This is the the reason and meaning of the death and resurrection of Christ. False religious systems, deny the power of Christ to put down sin and make righteousness reign, in human flesh.

The word of the truth of the gospel, declares: Christ is risen from the dead. Christ has delivered us from the power of darkness. Christ has translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. Christ has given us redemption through his blood. Christ has forgiven our sins. Christ has washed away our sins. Christ baptises us with the Holy Ghost. Christ is alive in us in newness of Life. This, Christ, is the image of the invisible God. This Christ, is the firstborn of every creature. This Jesus, created all things, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible. This Jesus created, thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers; all things were created by him, and for him: He is before all things, and by him all things consist. He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead. The Lord Jesus Christ has the preeminence above everything; for in him all fullness dwell. (Col 1:5, 13-19).

This mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; is that in him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. And we are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: In him we are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ. With him, we are buried in baptism. With him, we are risen through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. We once being dead in sins and the un circumcision of our flesh; Christ has now quickened us together with him. Christ has now, forgiven us of all trespasses. Christ has now, blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross. Christ, has, spoiled principalities and powers, defeating and triumphing over them, publicly. Jesus Christ, put down sin, publicly. Only, the apostolic doctrine, declares, or can declare this! (Col 2:9-15).

Now listen closely at the the absolute unity of the godhead is declared. Genesis said that God spoke and light appeared. Genesis says that the speech of God is powerful that it commands light to shine out of darkness. In the beginning, the speech of the Godhead created the worlds. As regard the creation of all things visible and invisible: God spoke them into existence.

But there is deeper truth, for the first utterance of the Godhead, that utterance that was uttered before the Godhead uttered creation into existence; is the utterance of the “Son of God”. When the Godhead began to speak, and image of himself was created. The first things created from the mouth of the Godhead is the firstborn of ever creature. Before the worlds were created, God made an image of himself, this image is the “son of God”. In this image God created all things visible and invisible. John 1:1 say that in the before the beginning of the of beginnings: “ was the ‘speech of God’, and the ‘speech of God’ was with God, and the ‘speech of God’ was God. The ‘speech of God’ was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. The ‘speech of God’ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature. The act of creation, even before the birth of angels, was the birth of the “son of God”. The ‘Son of God is not separate and distinct from the speech of God, for the ‘son of God” is God’s speech realized in the form of an image. The Lord Jesus Christ the stepping forth of the speech of God as the image of God. God did not create another God. The Lord Jesus Christ is not another God. The Lord Jesus Christ is only instrumentality of Godhead. In order to commence the work of redemption and creation the Lord Jesus Christ, God of very God, made himself to be an image. Christ stepped forth from the invisible to create angels; to create the worlds; to be born of virgin named Mary. Christ is stepping forth of the ‘speech of God’. It is as it was on the mount of transfiguration. On the Mt of transfiguration the fleshy image was transfigured into the non fleshy immortal image of speech. In creation the ‘speech of God’ took on the contours and profile of an image of himself. The mystery of God, and of the Father is: “in Christ dwells the complete fullness of the Godhead bodily”.

The angels were amazed when they learned that the immortal image was God was going be transfigured in flesh. The greatest mystery of all time is the becoming flesh of the immortal Godhead. The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. (1Jo 1:1-4).

The flesh of Christ, his resurrected spiritual body; his immortal image is made flesh in us through the instrumentality of the apostles doctrine; the apostles doctrine is the habitation of Christ in the church, which is his body. The Kerygma is the ‘systemic’ preaching of the Godhead of Christ. ‘Systemic’ meaning the literal operation of the Deity in every facet of the life of the church and the individual believer: from imagination to code of conduct; for idea to walk of life. God is absolutely One. Jesus Christ is that God. God kept secret in himself the joy of redemption. God kept secret in himself, even from angels and the prophets of old, his will and purpose that gave and continues to give him pleasure. The mystery of the joy of salvation; the joy of redemption; the joy of the in- gathering of the souls created by his faith. The joy of rescue! The joy snatching a soul from death and making that soul to share his divine likeness.
